THE KRATT METAPHOR

Collaboration with Eugénie Baccot

« KRATT: In Estonian folklore, a flying creature fashioned from old objects, which brings its master money or food. It can turn against its master if left idle. »
— November gooseberries, Andrus Kivirähk

The Estonian people's relationship with nature is inseparable from the omnipresence of paganism in their culture. So it's only natural that the government should evoke the Kratt, to raise public awareness of the notion of artificial intelligence and spark debate.
The Kratt metaphor explores Estonians' intimate relationship with nature through their pagan beliefs and their fusional relationship with technology in a fully digitalized country (99% of government services are online).
This CNAP-supported project was realized from 2020 to 2022 by Eugénie Baccot and Cyril Abad, freelance photographers and partners in life who regularly collaborate on long-term photographic projects.
